New English Restaurant & Pub “Canoe & Paddle” in Lakefield

Canoe and Paddle

Lakefield has a new Pub located at 18 Bridge Street beside Stuff’d in the old Hamblin’s location.

On one side is Stuff’d, a bakery and café with delicious ice cream, carrying on the long-time tradition at this location since the 1920’s.

On the other side of the location, serving up traditional English cuisine is the Canoe & Paddle.

Cottage Country Connection spoke to Jake Exton about the new pub. When asked about the name Jake stated “We wanted the name to reflect the community and its heritage and connect with a real social experience locally.”

The white bar is a tribute to the rich canoeing heritage of the Kawarthas. Hand built by family owners Nick and Hugh, it utilizes the same woods used in canoe construction. The bar front features 5 inch cedar and a 1 1/2 inch cherry strip in homage to the Lakefield Canoe Company, complete with cedar ‘ribs’ running vertically. The bar top is made from cherry, and has an ash ‘gunnel rail’ to complete the look.

A family owned business, Jake shares that the family moved here from England in 2007 after visiting the region for many years on holiday and always loving the time that they spent here.

The family also owns The Stuff Store on Queen Street in Lakefield and have plans to transfer some of the café menu items to the café side of the Stuff’d location.

Exton went on to say that the family hopes that the new English pub will be a real focal point for the community socially.

The pub with feature live music 2 or 3 nights a week and classic English food and 13 different types of Craft beer on tap. The pub will also serve bottled beer, wines and cocktails.

Patrons can expect to see authentic English style fare like Yorkshire Pudding, Toad-in-the-hole, Bangers and Mash, Beer Battered Fish and Chips and much more.
