The 29th season of Peterborough Musicfest, was not only a memorable one but also Doc Walker closed the season with an astonishing 15,000 fans.
I had the chance to sit down and talk with Tracey Randall, General Manager of Peterborough Musicfest on the closing night. Randall states, “Randy Bachman was a night to remember, he was our most expensive act ever. Last on our stage at age 50, and now 71, he totally rocked it, and had the whole crowd engaged despite the rain!”. Some of the 2015 acts included in the lineup were Chad Brownlee, Sass Jordon, Home Free, Francesco Yates/Tyler Shaw, and local artist Melissa Payne.
Peterborough Musicfest is one of the only free, all summer long, outdoor festivals. Tracey reminds us, “these acts are not free, and we must give a big thanks to all of our sponsors and attendees, without them it wouldn’t be possible”. Furthermore, she also mentions how important the volunteers, set up crew, parking attendants, and merchandise team are to the event. “Our 2015 summer crew made for a remarkable team which makes backstage a great place to work.”
It was interesting for me to learn the reason Musicfest lands on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Tracey exclaims, “The festival is on those days because of the farmers market. We want people to make a day of it, to be able to enjoy what local Peterborough has to offer, if you are a local yourself or from out of town. Go to the market, enjoy some local food, catch some lakeside scenery and end your night with dinner and a show.” She encourages boaters, reminding us that Musicfest is alongside a beautiful marina, “My hope is that boaters will come and enjoy the show, anchor on the lake, or dock at the marina. Let’s get that 1988 boat traffic back.” This is fascinating to me because it stretches outside of the already loyal, Peterborough community and attracts various tourists whether it be boaters, cottagers or those making a special visit to see that particular show.
When asked about year 2016 Randall replied “It’s our 30th year! It’s going to be BIG! Hopefully we will have Kim Mitchell, David Wilcox back and a few other surprises joining us”.
