Spring is a time for growth, and Lindsay’s historic Academy Theatre is helping to nurture growth in the City of Kawartha Lakes with some special programming next month. On May 6 and 7 we focus on growing the talent within our area, with Kawartha’s Got Talent, a showcase of performances by remarkable local residents. In the first part of Kawartha’s Got Talent on Saturday May 6, we’ll display the talents of several performers selected from auditions held in March. A handful of those acts will then be chosen to perform again on Sunday’s show entitled Best of the Best, which will feature a performance by Lindsay’s own The Kents! While this event is for adult performers 19 and up, the Academy plans to hold another event for children and youth up to age 18.
“We are excited to present this demonstration of the many gifted performers from the Kawartha Lakes,” said Academy manager Don Hughes. “When you stop to think about it, this area has produced many exceptional talents. Right now, professionals like the James Barker Band, The Kents, and the Strumbellas are growing phenomenally in popularity. A year ago, The Strumbellas sold out two shows at the Academy, with opening act The Kents. We are trying to find a workable date for the James Barker band as well. This year, the Strumbellas are performing at The Junos, where they have three award nominations.”
Growing the Gardens
In addition to growing our talent, we’ll also provide a focus on growing our gardens. On Friday May 12, the Academy will feature a presentation by renowned gardening expert and author Mark Cullen. This event is entitled “The New Canadian Garden”, which is also the title of Mark’s most recent book. Mark will not only focus on new trends in horticulture, but also examine the impact of changes in climate and biota, and how gardeners can adapt to them. Audience members can come prepared to ask Mark questions about their own experiences and challenges.
Mark Cullen’s presentation at the Academy is being sponsored by Lindsay’s own Home Hardware. “Our local Home Hardware has been a regular supporter of the Academy Theatre, with many vital contributions to us,” noted Hughes. “With that chain’s ongoing affiliation with Mark Cullen, this was a natural fit, and the local business has recognized the need to support the Academy in delivering diverse and valuable programming in our community.”
