Finding contemporary furniture with the same durability and attention to detail as 100 years ago might seem difficult today. If factoring in sustainability, the choices narrow further – but a Peterborough Ontario business has a solution that marries the past to the present while keeping a keen eye toward the future.
Gord Trask and partner Cindy Thompson set out to start their business, Sustain Furniture, considering the impact on the environment. Seeking a green resource for material, they quickly realized the potential of reclaiming wood from century barns. Finding an environmentally friendly finish was top priority for Gord who was in the fine woodworking industry for 6 years using harsh poisonous chemicals.
“We believe that what you buy, what it’s made from and where it comes from matters,” says Cindy. Confident that they found the right mix, Gord, who has 21 years experience as a licenced carpenter, set to work creating a line of wood furniture for every room of the house.
“I love working with the fantastic character of barn boards, celebrating the impurities and reclaiming history, one piece of furniture at a time,” says Gord. “Barn board is completely different than a veneer or newly milled lumber. The 100-year-old naturally aged beautiful tones are amazing and cannot be reproduced, every piece is truly unique.”
While Sustain Furniture has an amazing product line to choose from, much of their business is custom-made furniture.
Beds are their largest seller, although they craft everything from bedroom furniture to kitchen islands and everything in between. “If it’s wood, we can make it,” says Gord. “I can bring your ideas to life.”
The future of their product is also important to the pair. Their furniture is hand crafted for life and it won’t end up in a landfill.
