Bass & Muskie Fishing in Cottage Country
It is an exciting time of year for anglers with Bass and Muskie season opening in FMZ 17 (Peterborough and the Kawarthas). The weather is warming up and both species can be found in the shallows.
You can target Bass in shallow water cover: boat docks, trees, rock shoals etc. Bass tend to relate to this cover for ambush points to forage for baitfish crayfish and frogs. They can be caught on spinnerbaits, flipping jigs, soft plastics and of course the old faithful hook and worm. Or you can cover water using top water baits for some amazing heart thumping strikes.
Fishing for Muskie:
Muskie can be found on shallow water weed flats. Your best bait will be rolling inline bucktail spinners or shallow running Big Jerk baits. Be prepared to have some patience with them, if you stick with it – the reward is well worth the wait. You can also troll and cover more water. Be prepared to handle these big critters with care as they are a precious resource.
Remember to buy your fishing license for the season or for the duration of your vacation. There are many different types of licences including sporting or conservation, also non-resident licenses available for people visiting Ontario. Be sure to purchase the correct license for your needs. To learn more, go to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry automated licencing website.
Good luck and enjoy your fishing adventures!
